The right way to clean and maintain stainless steel

maintaining stainless steel

Stainless steel, once the mainstay of a commercial kitchen or laboratory, has become mainstream. Stainless steel countertops, casework, and appliances
are popular in homes and businesses for good reason: they are sleek, beautiful, and stylish. Stainless steel can be fabricated to meet special needs
and will last for years. Keeping your stainless steel in tip-top shape is easy with regular cleaning and maintenance.

1. Do No Harm: Avoid Common Cleaning Errors

While stainless steel is durable, it can be damaged if not cared for properly. What should you avoid?

  • Chlorine bleach
  • Oven cleaners
  • Abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads such as steel wool or brushes
  • Cleaning hot stainless steel surfaces
  • Using dirty or hard water to clean the surfaces

2. Clean the Surface

You should always consult the manufacturer or fabricator’s instructions for cleaning. Some general guidelines include removing debris from the surface
immediately, wiping with the grain, and using a mild detergent, hot water, and a soft cloth to clean the surface. Stainless steel has a well-earned
reputation for durability, but using an acidic cleaner can damage the surface. Instead, using warm water and a mild dishwashing detergent will remove
most dirt from the surface. For tough dirt or stains, you can try a commercially available cleanser or a homemade paste of dishwasher liquid and baking soda. Be sure to dry the surface with a soft cloth to maintain shine – allowing water to dry on
stainless steel will leave your surfaces with a cloudy appearance.

3. Periodic Maintenance

Occasionally you may notice a scratch or other damage in the surface of your stainless steel equipment. Commercially available products can remove free iron deposits, small spots of rust, and enhance shine. Even
small scratches can be repaired, returning your stainless steel product to its original glory. These products are specially made for stainless steel
and are non-abrasive to ensure the surface is not damaged.
