When stainless steel is the perfect option in your project

08.14.2023

There are many reasons stainless steel is an excellent choice for projects. Its many properties make it the optima choice in certain settings. Stainless Steel is heat resistant and less likely to corrode, as opposed to other metals such as aluminum. Stainless Steel is durable, strong, and its clean, sleek look makes it attractive with many modern aesthetics.

Benefits of Stainless Steel

Because stainless steel contains chromium; it is resistant to staining and rusting. In residential settings, stainless steel is optimal for outdoor kitchen projects.

Many manufacturers add other elements to improve steel’s corrosion-resistant properties. Nickel, nitrogen and molybdenum are a few of the elements added. These additives are the reason there are over 60 different grades of stainless steel. Because of its heat resistant properties and many different gauges, stainless steel can be adaptable to variety of projects.

Stainless steel can be recycled without losing its strength and quality, making it environmentally friendly.

Grades of Stainless Steel

There are many different grades of stainless steel. For the purposes of this blog, we are going to concentrate on the 2 main grades used by us at SFI. The main difference between these 2 types of stainless are the amounts of chromium, nickel & molybdenum present.

Type 304 generally contains 18% chromium & 10% nickel. This is the grade of stainless most commonly used by SFI.

Type 316 generally contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel & 2% molybdenum. This addition of the molybdenum allows for a higher degree of corrosion resistance. This grade of stainless withstands corrosive elements such as saltwater. This grade of stainless steel is ideal for outdoor kitchens, clean rooms, labs, etc.

Projects Where Stainless Steel is the Best Choice

Stainless Steel is the best option in many applications of its nonporous & sanitary properties and its ability to withstand the corrosion of harsh chemicals commonly used in the areas listed below.

  • Laboratories
  • Hospitals
  • Clean Rooms
  • Restaurant / Commercial Facilities
  • Residential Kitchens & Outdoor Kitchens
  • Schools – Cafeteria / Concessions / Restroom Facilities / Classrooms
  • Any projects that require a high strength to weight ratio

In short, Stainless Steel maintains better than other materials facing high risk of heat or chemical damage.

Cost efficiency

Because it is considerably stronger and more durable than traditional wood, laminate or epoxy; having to replace or renovate equipment on a regular basis due to wear and tear, happens less often.
